Curtain Up! October 2 - November 1, 2009
The curtain is going up on our new season with a tribute to the origins of the Broadway musical – the quintessential American art form that has become the hallmark of Kansas City’s intimate cabaret theatre.
Curtain Up! showcases songs from 1900 to 1930 that illustrate how the Broadway musical evolved from operetta and vaudeville into the sophisticated, traditional book format that we know today. Immigrants put their stamp on Broadway’s early years with such songs as “Alexander's Ragtime Band”, “I Love a Piano” (Irving Berlin); and “Fascinating Rhythm”, “Someone to Watch Over Me” (George Gershwin). Cole Porter turned heads with his penchant for witty, even racy lyrics, epitomized by the popular song “Let’s Do It.” In the late 1920s, song, dance and plot finally melded into one seamless performance in Jerome Kern’s landmark musical, Showboat (“Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man,” “Make Believe”).
Pianist and emcee J. Kent Barnhart, Izzie Baldwin, Seth Golay and Molly Hammer (shown above, left to right) perform these songs plus other favorites in this tribute to Broadway's inaugural decades.
Season Tickets to all six shows in our series All Aboard for Broadway are also still available for only $144!
